I work as a Oracle DBA/UNIX sys admin for Hard Rock Cafe. If you have worked on UNIX before and have a general knowledge of how to get around you'll be fine. I started as a DBA and inherited the UNIX sys admin duties. My only advice is be resourceful (Mandatory in this profession) and if any one ever says anything to you that you don't know, just look at them and say "I'll fix it in a little while." then go get a solution, call a friend, use the internet, etc. I've been at this nearly 5 years (as a DBA) and 2 years with sys admin responsiblity also, and I still see stuff I don't know from time to time. No one can know it all, but at the DBA/sys admin level we know more than just about anyone else relative to our work. Hard Rock needs me because I keep the systems running and no one else is involved at my level i.e. JOB SECURITY. I take my job very seriously, but have fun. Sounds like you have it made there, just be friendly and you should be making some fat $$$, I know I do here in orlando.
